Avedis
Balekian
May 31, 1944 – November 1, 2025
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Avedis ("Avie") F. Balekian, who peacefully left us to be with our Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at the age of 81.
Born on May 31, 1944, in Fresno, California, Avie was the son of Frank Sr. and Mary Balekian. He grew up immersed in the agricultural and Armenian communities of the Central Valley. Sundays were often spent visiting his grandparents' farm, enjoying homemade Armenian dishes, and traditional music. These early years instilled in him a deep love for his heritage, culture, and family. Farming remained close to his heart—whether tending his garden, buying fresh produce during Fresno visits, or sharing fruits and vegetables from his own harvest with loved ones.
After graduating from Roosevelt High School, Avie earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from California State University, Fresno. On June 12, 1967, he began a 52-year career in civil service dedicated to the U.S. Navy and Air Force defense programs at the Port Hueneme and Point Mugu Naval Bases. Avie helped shape modern naval defense systems by developing aerial vehicles and missile systems with new moving-target capabilities. His commitment earned him recognition and accolades from senior naval officials, including the Chief of Naval Operations. For Avie, his work was more than a career—it was his contribution to protecting freedom and safeguarding those unable to defend themselves.
Alongside his many professional achievements, Avie's strong commitment to his family was equally significant. He met the love of his life, Lauren Johnson, at an Armenian Youth Federation (AYF) convention in San Francisco during the summer of 1969. Though separated by distance while Lauren attended pharmacy school in Massachusetts, their bond grew stronger through long-distance phone calls and many mutual visits to AYF events. Avie eventually drove his treasured 1967 Cougar, which the family still owns, to Washington, D.C., where he was stationed for work, to visit Lauren in Massachusetts on weekends.
They were married on August 1, 1970, in Fresno, California, and settled in Camarillo, CA. There, they built a beautiful life together and raised their three children—Vahan, Talene, and Diran. Their home was filled with laughter, love, and gatherings that celebrated every milestone: birthdays, graduations, weddings, and baptisms. In later years, Avie found great joy traveling between Camarillo, Palm Desert, and Cape Cod, spending precious time with his family. He truly cherished all the memories and connections he formed with his family, none more so than the special bond he created with all his grandchildren.
Avie was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Sr. and Mary Balekian, and his brother, Jack Balekian. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Lauren; his children and their spouses, Dr. Christine and Vahan Balekian, Dr. Talene and Gary Churukian, and Drs. Diran and Diana Balekian, and his six precious grandchildren, Nicolas, Andre, Garen, Mina, Jack, and Camille. He is also survived by his brother Frank, Jr, and sister-in-law Karen Balekian; his brothers- and sisters-in-law Peter and Brenda Johnson, and Richard and Lisa Johnson; six nieces, two nephews, one great-nephew, and four great-nieces, all of whom he adored deeply.
For those who knew him best, Avie will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, humor, and pride in his Armenian roots. He was a true kefji—always ready to dance, play tavloo, or enjoy fresh choreg. From pinching mantas in the kitchen to leading the dance line at family gatherings, Avie's presence brought joy to every occasion.
Avie's family extends their deepest gratitude to all who have offered love, prayers, and support. His spirit of generosity, devotion, and love for life will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
