Obituary

Cynthia Ann Orona-Hernandez
1955 - 2023

On December 31, 1955 A precious baby girl was born in Los Angeles, CA to Elmira Orona and walked into the Kingdom of Heaven on April 11th, 2023. Cindy was raised in Madera, CA by her loving Grandparents Esiquiel and Lucinda Orona.

She graduated from Madera High School in 1973 with honors and was accepted to Fresno State University. She was the first in her family to attend college. Her family, especially her Daddy couldn't had been prouder.

During her years at Fresno State she served on several Raza committees where she gravitated to leadership and activism roles. In these roles is where Cindy found her purpose and calling to help serve her community.

She devoted herself to the Chicano Youth Center and their mission, where she organized activities, field trips and fundraisers to help the disadvantage youth of her community. She was a leader in M.E.CH.A. and inspired los Ninos and Ninas to be proud of their Latino heritage. Cindy was a member of Hijas de Tonantzin, a leadership group for young Chicanas in the Central Valley. Most importantly, she was a present, loving, and caring figure in their lives.

During her time at Chicano Youth Center, she met Danny. In Danny's own words "she stole his heart," (not the office supplies.) They would go on to spend the next 44 years creating a life of love, devotion and family.

Being a Mom to Lil Danny, Tita  and Norman was Cindy's greatest title until her grandsons came along and promoted her to "Granny." She loved spending time with her grand-babies whether it was listening to them read for homework, on a family trip together, at school events, or just at home watching movies, her grand-babies were everything to her.

For 25 years, Cindy worked for the The City Of Fresno Parks and Recreation Department. She held multiple positions and job titles.  Dedicated to her calling, that's our Cindy she focused on enriching the lives of others through youth programs and was recognized by her peers as a gifted grant writer. Cindy served with love and compassion to others until her retirement in 2002.

In 2005 Cindy was introduce to Valley Center of The Blind Fresno.  She sought out services and learned how to read braille. She showed true resiliency during the progressive loss of her own vision by focusing on serving and helping the visually impaired.  Cindy soon became a volunteer, and invaluable staff member. Always writing from her heart, she single handedly secured a six figure grant for the center.  Sharing her talent of bring people together for the greater good and creating positive change to the blind community.

Families and friends flocked toward her bubbly personality and loving nature, sound advice and delicious home-cooked meals and desserts. She loved her familia.
