Obituary

Daniel and Deborah Hinojosa
January 20, 2021
Fresno, California - Daniel (born April 15, 1955) and Deborah (born June 3rd, 1953) passed away January 20th, 2021 in Fresno, California, one month shy of their 40th wedding anniversary. Inseparable since the day they met at the Fresno Fair, Dan and Deborah lived every moment together and pursued careers to improve the lives of their fellow Californians. From an early age Dan was drawn to space, science, and engineering, and he took a personal interest in his siblings' and children's education. He attended San Joaquin Memorial and later studied engineering at San Jose State University. Dan worked his entire life as a civil engineer, becoming a certified Professional Engineer and teaching classes at UC Berkeley's Extension program to civil engineering students. His work left an indelible, hidden-in-plain-sight mark on the landscape of California, his countless projects including the Fresno State Bulldog Stadium, BART extension to San Jose, SFO terminal 3, and most recently the high speed rail line through the Central Valley. Deborah played in the band and graduated from Antioch High School, studied health science in college, and began her career as a pediatric nurse with Kaiser in San Diego before taking a pause to raise their three children as the family moved to Abu Dhabi for four years. While in the UAE during the Gulf War, Dan and Deborah loved to host American servicemen and women stationed overseas for Deborah's home cooked meals and phone calls to family back home. After returning to California, Deborah started volunteering in the local elementary school where she discovered a love of teaching, leading her to get a Masters of Education and eventually retiring as a 3rd grade teacher in Redwood City. Dan and Deborah loved visiting their grandchildren in Texas, cheering for the Bulldogs, and attending many shows, concerts, and plays. Dan and Deborah leave behind their beloved children Ginamarie (and husband, Ben), Andrea (and fiancé, Marcos), and Nathan; grandchildren Theo, Mika, and Laurel; Dan's siblings Noe, Clara (and husband, John), Vickie (and husband, Greg), and Julie; Deborah's sister Laura (and husband, Gary); many nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless friends, colleagues, and students. Dan is preceded in death by his parents Jesse and Lilia, and brother Mario; Deborah by her parents Ann and Calvin, stepfather Rule, and brother Tom. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Dan and Deborah to Fresno State (Advancement Services, 559.278.4036) an institution that gave them and their children education and joy.
