Dorothy Ann Kateian, 90, of Fresno, California, passed away Thursday, August 15, 2024. She was born March 31, 1934, in Tulare, California, the daughter of George (Krikor) and Isabel (Sukasian) Toomajian. She attended Washington Union High School, graduating in 1952 with Academic Honors. Dorothy first went to work for the Fresno Bee where she spent 7 years. She married her husband, Andrew Kateian on September 15, 1956. In 1959 she took time away from her job to focus on starting a family and raising two small children. In 1969 she went back to work with the Fresno Unified School District (FUSD) starting off as a Librarian, then as an Office Manager before moving onto the Budget and Finance Department, managing the District Budget. Dorothy's work ethic, skill and discipline were highly respected by FUSD Administrators and as a result, she was routinely asked to coordinate the opening of new schools. She retired in 2004 after 35 years' service. Dorothy will be fondly remembered for her humble, giving nature, wise intellect, sharp wit, infectious laugh, love of animals and as a devoted, loving mother, grandmother, and wife. In her free time, she was a great cook, enjoyed sewing, exercise, playing piano, gardening, loved going to casinos to play her Keno Slots, hosting parties for family and friends, and spending time at their home on the Central Coast area. Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Andrew, of Fresno, CA, son, Scott of Seattle, WA , daughter, Janice, of Clovis, CA, two grandchildren, Aris and Aubrie Kateian, also of Clovis, CA, her brother, Peter Toomajian, of Fresno, CA., and nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to give special thanks to the team at AseraCare Hospice, Jacklyn Kurisu and Barbara Robinson, each for their extraordinary kindness and care.
Services will be held on Friday, September 6th, at 11:00 A.M. at Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church, 2226 E. Cesar Chavez Blvd. (Ventura Ave.), Fresno, CA 93721, with Pastor Rev. Fr. Ashod Khachadourian presiding. Graveside burial will follow at Ararat Cemetery, 1929 West Belmont Ave., Fresno, CA. A viewing is scheduled for Thursday, September 5th, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Yost and Webb Funeral Home, 1002 T Street, Fresno, CA 93721.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed in her name to Fresno Humane Animal Services, 1510 West Dan Ronquillo Drive, Fresno CA 93706.
