Eleanor Mildred Herbert
1927 - 2023
Eleanor Mildred Herbert passed away peacefully on October 26, 2023 at age 96. Eleanor was born in San Francisco to Margaret Jane Roycroft and Thomas Hunt on August 15, 1927. She was raised with her sisters Margaret Kathleen and Ruth Marion in San Francisco. When she was in high school, the family moved to Farmington, CA, and she graduated from Escalon High School in 1945.
Eleanor attended business school and after graduating went to work for Stanley Herbert of Farmington, the father of her good friend, Mary Jane. Eleanor agreed to go on a blind date with Mary Jane's brother, Edward "Ned" Herbert, upon his return to Farmington after serving in World War II. Eleanor and Ned fell in love and were married on April 18, 1948, settling in Manteca, CA.
They had three children, Karen, William, and James, and raised a very happy family. With Ned's work, Eleanor and family moved from Manteca to Bakersfield and finally, in 1965, to Fresno, where Eleanor and Ned lived out the rest of their lives.
While Ned worked for PG&E, Eleanor kept very busy maintaining their household and staying active in their church and community. She and Ned were members of Millbrook Presbyterian Church and Eleanor served as Millbrook's wedding reception coordinator for many years.
She was actively involved with ministries including New Life for Girls, where she taught sewing and ministered to many young ladies over the span of many years. Eleanor was a constant support, dearest friend, and loving wife to Ned for 70 years until his passing in 2018, and her family rejoices that they are reunited in Heaven. Eleanor's life was marked by her faith in Jesus Christ and her love and service to Him.
Eleanor is survived by her three children, Karen Greene, William (Debbie) Herbert, and James (Sue) Herbert, along with 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Though Eleanor will be deeply missed, she will be remembered well for her love of God and others, her words of wisdom, and her love of singing.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, November 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Stockton Rural Cemetery in Stockton, Californi.
Contributions may be given in Eleanor's name to the donor's favorite charity.
