Obituary

Eleene Joan Hill was born to Vernon Willard Hill and Cynthia Eleene Hill on February 10, 1947, in San Diego, California. There she and her brother, Vernon, spent many happy childhood hours together. Eleene also loved being a Girl Scout. After high school she attended San Diego State University, where she participated in campus ministry activities of the Wesley Foundation. While studying Eleene also worked for the city of San Diego as a typist in the police department. After college she worked full time, and was promoted to senior stenographer. During her last 10 years with the city, she worked for mayors Frank Curran and Pete Wilson.

In July of 1977 Eleene was introduced to Thomas Myers by his mother, Gwen Myers (a fellow First Church Chancel Choir member). Tom and Eleene became engaged that December and were married March 4, 1978. They had their first son, Matthew Thomas, on May 19, 1979. Two years later (to the day) they welcomed Mark Andrew. Timothy James followed on November 19, 1984, exactly 3 years and 6 months later. Together they raised their sons in their home in the Mira Mesa neighborhood of San Diego.

The family created enduring memories doing what they all loved: camping, fishing and being outdoors. They camped throughout the West and visited National Parks including Yosemite, Grand Teton, Grand Canyon, Lake Tahoe, and Yellowstone. Eleene spent countless hours playing supermom for her boys. She baked them tasty treats, made Halloween and school performance costumes from scratch, played team mom and carted the boys around to their many sporting events, church youth group, and many extracurricular activities. Eleene opened her home to her boys' many friends and was considered another mom by the neighborhood kids. Eleene also enjoyed bowling; she especially loved engaging her boys in a friendly game ... followed by (lovingly) rubbing their faces in the defeat they usually suffered. Eleene also loved to swim. Her pride and joy was her backyard pool, where she enjoyed countless hours just floating and wading. Riding horses was one of Eleene's most favorite thing to do. She spent many hours with her horse Shane. Throughout her adult life, she also sang in the church choir. Her boys fondly remember being sung to sleep as children by Eleene's favorite church hymns.

In the late 80s, when construction came to a halt and the family faced financial burdens, Eleene ran a day care from home. She also attended night school to enhance her secretarial skills, in order to return to the work force after more than 13 years out. The long nights and hard work paid off in December of 1994, when she began working for First Church as Rev. Mark Trotter's administrative assistant. She worked at First Church for 21 years, retiring in February 2016.

In August of 2018, Eleene and Tom bought their dream retirement home in Oakhurst, California. Later that year Eleene was diagnosed with peritoneal cancer and resumed her role as a warrior, battling bravely for 3 years. On May 7, 2021, Eleene took her last breath in the comfort of her home with her husband, son and grandson by her side.

Eleene was predeceased by her son Matt in 2013. She is survived by Tom, her husband of 43 years; brother, Vern Hill (Melinda); sons Mark (Lissette) Myers and Timothy (Kaitlyn) Myers; and her 10 grandchildren, whom she greatly adored.
