Obituary

George Ray Melton was born on September 3, 1947. George passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on September 13, 2025. He is preceded in death by parents Paul and Jeanette Melton. He is survived by his wife Denise of 46 years, daughter Ashley and husband Aaron Arii, granddaughters Ansley and Adelyn, and sons Brandon and Matthew Melton. He is also survived by brothers Paul, John, Walt (Anne), and sister Jean Poole, as well as many nieces and nephews.

George was born in Arlington, Virginia. He was the youngest of 5 children and his family moved to Fresno, California when he was five years old. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1966.

In 1978 George met his wife, Denise, while he was on a sales call at Gemco where Denise worked. They were married the following year in 1979 and were blessed with three children they raised in Fresno. George and his family became members of First Presbyterian Church where they regularly attended and worshipped.

An active member of the community, George was also a long-time booster of Fresno State athletics. He enjoyed cheering on his Bulldogs at every home football and basketball game. George participated in the Fresno Rotary Club. He volunteered at countless events over the years including youth sporting events, church high school retreats, and took time to cook and feed others.

George's career in sales was extensive, ranging from selling picture frames, diapers, Kleenex, and cars. He and his brother Paul founded Bushrod's BBQ, creating family-secret specialty rubs and sauces. Several opportunities were opened for Bushrod's to cater major events including NASCAR and NHRA races across the country. After many years in sales, George made numerous connections and friendships, always seeing a familiar face anywhere he went. He is well remembered for his exceptional BBQ skills and recipes.

George earned a black belt in Karate in his early 30s. His hobbies included fishing, golfing, and playing cards, which all brought out his competitive spirit. George had a passion for sweets and never passed up an opportunity to appreciate a good dessert. He enjoyed spending his free time watching NASCAR races, cheering for the San Francisco 49ers and Giants, and taking family trips to the beach.

George's greatest pride was his family, who he greatly cherished. He consistently showed up to support his kids and grandchildren in all their endeavors. He was a loving husband, father and Papa who will be remembered for selflessly giving his time and love to his family and friends. He will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 1540 M. Street, Fresno, CA 93721. Donations in George's memory may be made to American Cancer Society and/or Martin Park.
