Obituary

Janice "Mickie" Rae Watts (nee Payne) of Fresno completed her earthly journey on July 20, 2025, after a lifetime filled with devotion to her family and the warmth of many welcomes she extended to those whose paths she crossed. Mickie was 84.

On New Year's Day 1941 in Fresno, Mickie and her sister Janet were the first twins born in California. As the older fraternal twin, Mickie would often tease Janet about being a leftover from 1940, thrown in as a bonus.

The Payne family home was where friends and family were a constant presence and always welcome, setting the stage for Mickie's hospitality throughout her adult life.

She studied child psychology at Fresno City College and Fresno State.

In early 1961, she met James Watts, and they wed that November 4, beginning 63 years together. Jim and Mickie raised their children Kimberley, Linda and Karl in a home filled with a sense of family, warmth and love, mirroring Mickie's childhood experience.

Mickie was "Mom" for many neighborhood kids, always making sure everyone had something to eat or a place to stay if and when needed. She also participated in her children's activities as PTA president, Girl Scout leader, and a soccer and band mom. She worked and traveled for Masonic Lodge activities, too.

In 1977, Jim and Mickie became self-employed, with Mickie running the office part of their business and also learning how to drive a large ice cream wholesale delivery truck to run a daily route. The business transitioned into an ice-cream warehouse, specializing in wholesale sales. Mickie was the president and in charge of all aspects of the company.

Mickie had a full and busy life, but she also knew the importance of having fun. Her passion for good times and hospitality led to many trips to the California coast to spend time in their motorhome or a rented house at Cayucos. She and Jim also enjoyed ocean cruises and visiting Hawaii.

Mickie is survived by her beloved spouse, Jim; their daughters, Kimberley Rodriguez (Matt) and Linda Kochergen (Joe); their son, Karl Watts (Teresa); seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mickie's twin, Janet Ghan, and younger sister, Patricia Flock, also survive her.

She was preceded in death by her older sister, Roberta MacAllister.

A private family celebration of Mickie's life is being planned. The family asks that any remembrance be donated to S.P.C.A.
