Obituary

John Louis Maxey was born to parents John L. Maxey and Marie Salter Maxey, both preceded him in death, in Fresno, CA. John was reared and obtained his education in Fresno where he graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School. Shortly after high school, in 1964, he joined the US Army and served as a Medical Corpsman until 1966 when he was honorably discharged. While in the military he garnered his experience as a surgery technician which led to him joining the medical team at Fresno Veterans Medical Affairs Center where he worked until 1972. John then joined his mother working for many years as a Residential Service Provider to persons with developmental disabilities. He ultimately acquired his own clients and managed his own facility until his retirement in 2009. To know John is to appreciate his unwavering love for the Oakland Raiders. John watched many games and when time permitted, he would drive to the Bay Area to attend games. He had an equal love for billiards and was a member of APA (Amateur Pool Association) for many years. He loved shooting pool as much as he loved the Raiders. John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Valarie Maxey, and his children Marie "Toni" Braggs (Ray) of Fairfield, CA, John L. Maxey Jr. of Fresno, CA, and Vanessa Maxey-Vasquez (Salomon) of Kaneohe, HI. He leaves two grandchildren, Ajani and Mora Braggs. He will also be missed by his sisters Michele Davis of Easton, VA, Verdis Harvey (preceded him in death), and Caroline Maxey of Vallejo CA. He leaves his brothers Kevin Maxey of Fresno, CA, Nathan Maxey of Manteca, CA and Aurelius Maxey of Fresno, CA, and brother-in-laws Darrel Drone of Hanford, CA and Kareem Drone of Fresno, CA.
