Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Agajanian, age 100, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2025, in Fresno, California. A centenarian whose life spanned a remarkable century of change and growth, Joe was born on March 26, 1925, at Dearborn Hospital in Madera, California. He was a devoted husband to Helen Agajanian (born 1929, passed 1995) and a loving father to Joey, Gary, and Lori. Joe lived a full century marked by dedication to family, faith, and the land he so passionately cultivated.

A proud graduate of Madera High School in 1944, Joe soon joined the United States Navy to serve during World War II. From June 1944 to February 1946, he served with distinction as a Petty Officer First Class—a chapter of his life that remained a lasting source of pride.

Following his military service, Joe began a lifelong career in agriculture. Farming cotton, melons, tobacco, and black-eyed peas across 1,160 acres, he later transitioned into viticulture and nut farming. He planted and managed over 840 acres of wine grapes, raisins, and walnuts, while also developing more than 3,320 acres for investors. Joe's strong work ethic and deep knowledge of the land earned him respect throughout California's agricultural community.

Joe also found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed fishing and often traveled to favorite destinations such as the Central Coast of California, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, and Las Vegas. In quieter moments at home, he found satisfaction in painting and gardening—pursuits that reflected both his creativity and love for nature.

Faith played an important role throughout his life. Baptized and married at Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church in Fresno, he attended various Protestant churches in Madera and Fresno. His favorite Bible verses, "A wise youth makes hay while the sun shines, but what a shame to see a person who sleeps away their hour of opportunity" (Proverbs 10:5) and "Don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today" (Matthew 6:34), offered guiding wisdom that he often shared with others.

Joe was known for his easy-going nature and good humor. He was a family man who valued time spent with loved ones. His favorite sayings—"Slow down, take it easy," "Make hay while the sun shines," "Don't be in a hurry," and "The problem with people is TOO MUCH MONEY"—captured both his practical outlook on life and his light-hearted spirit.

He is lovingly remembered by his three children: Joey Agajanian (66), Lori Agajanian (45), and Gary Agajanian (65); two granddaughters, Sarah Agajanian (24) and Megan Agajanian (22); and nephew Stuart Duzan. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Noroian) Agajanian (born in Fresno, California, on June 21, 1929, and passed away August 15, 1995), father Ardash Agajanian (born November 8, 1888, in Moush, Armenia), mother Varsenig (Garabedian) Agajanian (born September 10, 1895, in Erzurum, Armenia), half-brother Lloyd Duzian (born October 3, 1912, in Erzurum), and half-brother Harold Duzian (born January 10, 1914, in Constantinople).

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at Holy Trinity Armenian Apostolic Church, 2226 Ventura Avenue in Fresno, at 10:00 AM. A graveside service will follow at Ararat Armenian Cemetery at 1925 W. Belmont Avenue in Fresno at 11:00 AM.

May Joseph "Joe" Agajanian's memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to all who honor a life well-lived.
