Kathleen Rae Elia

February 27, 1944 – November 18, 2025

Kathleen Rae Elia, a lifelong resident of Fresno known for her quick wit and independent spirit, passed away on November 18, 2025. Born on February 27, 1944, to Henry and Gladys Elia, Kathleen grew up in a household grounded in faith and family. She shared an especially close and enduring bond with her elder sister, Janice, a relationship that remained a cornerstone of her life.

A proud product of local schools, Kathleen attended Winchell Elementary and Longfellow Junior High before graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1962. After completing her studies at Fresno City College in 1964, she embarked on a distinguished 22-year career with the Fresno County Public Library. Even after her retirement in 1989, she remained a vibrant fixture within the Retired Employees of Fresno County, rarely missing an opportunity to reconnect with former colleagues.

Kathleen's love for people and culture extended to her long-time involvement with the Fresno Convention and Entertainment Center. From the 1970s through the 90s, she worked behind the scenes of Fresno's biggest events, largely for the joy of experiencing the performances and the wonderful opportunity to run into and visit with the many friends and relatives in attendance. She cherished the enduring friendships she built with colleagues and community members during her time there.

Her curiosity often took her beyond the Central Valley. She spent a formative summer in Greece, staying with a close family friend to experience the culture firsthand. Her travels also led her to Spain, Paris, London, Hawaii, Mexico, and the Pacific Northwest. Closer to home, she enjoyed many trips within California, embracing these journeys with enthusiasm whether traveling independently or with family. She returned from every destination with cherished memories that she loved sharing with those close to her.

Kathleen's adventurous nature was matched by her profound capacity for care. She lovingly devoted herself as the primary caregiver for her parents during their later years, providing patient and unwavering support. Her faith was equally central to her life; she was a familiar face at Pilgrim Armenian Congregational, Faith Baptist Church of Fresno, and First Armenian Presbyterian. She took great pride in her heritage, frequently attending many of the various Armenian church and cultural events throughout the valley.

Kathleen had a natural gift for humor and a sharp wit that could brighten any room. She was a warm, caring presence who made an impact on those around her simply by being herself.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Thomas Fowler, and her nephews, Tom and Craig Fowler. She will be remembered with love and cherished always by the many friends and family members whose lives she touched.

Kathleen was laid to rest at Ararat Cemetery, 1925  W Belmont Ave Fresno CA 93728.

Remembrances may be made in Kathleen's memory to Pilgrim Armenian Congregational Church or Faith Baptist Church of Fresno.
