Obituary

On January 30, 1959, La Schelle Tarver was born to Mary Jackson in Modesto, CA. Born the fourth of six sons, La Schelle was a kind, calm, and enthusiastic individual.

In early life La Schelle attended James Madison elementary school, Thomas Jefferson middle school, and Madera High School c/o 1977. As he grew up, La Schelle excelled in many sports such as basketball and football but significantly stood out in baseball.

Best known for his speed, La Schelle started on Madera's varsity baseball team as a sophomore and for the next three years he went on to shine. La Schelle shined so bright that in 1977 he was the first African American player to be honored as an MVP of the NYL North Yosemite League. That same year he also played in the All-Star game. He continued playing at Reedley Junior College and Sacramento State. In 1980, La Schelle was drafted by the New York Mets and played from 1981 to 1985. In November of 1985, La Schelle made his grand entrance in Major League Baseball when he was traded to the Boston Red Sox later winning the 1986 American League Championship Series.

After his baseball career, La Schelle was a long-time corrections officer for t Fresno County Sheriff's Department from 2001 until his retirement in 2021. La Schelle devoted his off time to his family especially his daughter, granddaughters and great – grandchildren.

La Schelle leaves to cherish his only child Shontel Sumler (Clovis, CA); four granddaughters Kiah Sumler (Fresno, CA), Amira Sumler (Fresno, CA), Zarria Sumler, and Suraya Phillips; three great-grandchildren Xxavior Sumler, Elijah Melero, and Saiani Flowers. Five brothers; Paul Brice (Madera, CA), Anthony Brice (Memphis, TN), Tyrone Brice (Chowchilla, CA), Rodney Jackson (Fresno, CA), Ken Jackson (Fresno, CA), and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

In the embrace of eternity, La Schelle is reunited with his mother Mary Jackson. As we bid farewell to this remarkable soul, may we carry forward the light of his spirit - one that forever remains etched in our hearts.
