Lisa
Penner
March 10, 1990 – May 9, 2024
Lisa Yong-Nan Penner, age 34, passed away at her home in Fresno surrounded by loved ones on May 9, 2024. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2023 and fought valiantly to overcome her illness with grace, integrity, humor, and love.
She was born in Seoul, South Korea on March 10, 1990. Her parents, Carol and David Penner, were blessed to bring Lisa into their lives and returned home with Lisa in August of 1990. She was a 2008 graduate of Fresno High School and thereafter attended Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas where she obtained a bachelor's degree in business administration.
Lisa met her future husband Matt in 2015 who was living in San Francisco. After building a long-distance relationship for almost a year, Lisa moved up to the Bay Area. They had fun exploring the city together, taking their dog to the beach and catching as many Giants games as they could. In 2016 they were engaged and moved back to Fresno, getting married in October 2017, sharing almost ten wonderful years together.
Lisa was a gifted person, known for her inclusive kindness towards all individuals. Lisa would seek out people on the margins and include them in activities or outings in which she participated in. She was a wonderful, funny, big-hearted soul and never wasted an opportunity to be kind to someone and make them feel seen. She brought light and joy to those around her.
Lisa had an adventurous spirit and loved to explore new places. Her travels took her to Germany, Italy, Spain, Thailand, The Philippines, Hawaii, and many other places throughout the United States. Upon returning from a trip, she would eagerly begin researching and planning their next one.
Lisa is survived by her husband Matt Friesen, parents Carol and David Penner, brother Andrew Penner, sister in-law Jennifer, and their daughter Ruby, and grandmother Ruby Waltner. There are also many other family and friends who will miss her deeply.
