Mary Joan
Smothers
December 15, 1946 – January 13, 2021
Mary Joan Smothers, age 74, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2021 in Fresno, California.
Mary was born on December 15, 1946 in LaJolla, California to the late Leo and Lucille Weikel. Her family moved to Chowchilla, California in 1950 where she attended elementary school, while her family ran the dairy farm. In 1964, her family sold the dairy farm and relocated to Chino, California where she graduated from Chino High School in 1965. In 1972 she moved to Kerman California where she raised her two children, Paul and Jessica Satragni. In 1980, she met her husband David Smothers and they married in Lake Tahoe in 1984 and finally moved to Fresno California in 1990 to be closer to family.
Mary was an amazing wife, mother, friend, sister, grandmother, and was known for her incredible work ethic. Mary began her career in banking in the early 1970's as a bank teller/loan officer and ended her professional career as an administrative assistant at Laid Law Transit in 2005.
In 2005 Mary finally retired to now play her greatest role in life yet; the role of being a grandmother (or as her grandchildren called her, Nama). Her two grandchildren, Trent and Kendall Thompson, were her pride and joy, and vowed to always be there for them no matter what. From picking them up from school in her Toyota Highlander, also known as, "The Little White Bus," to spoiling them with back tickles, Gas Station Wednesdays, and annual summer trips to Pismo and the cabin in Clio, Mary truly loved spending time with her grandchildren and family. Her kind and loving nature always made spending time with her so special. Some of her other favorite hobbies were, baking, gardening, and watching and rooting on her San Francisco Giants.
Mary is survived by her husband David Smothers; son, Paul Satragni Jr., his wife Tara; son, Robert Smothers, his wife Christine; daughter, Jessica Torigian, her husband Armen; honorary son, Roger Thompson Jr., his wife Jennifer; grandchildren, Trent and Kendall Thompson and honorary grandson Jonah Fragus. She is also survived by her brothers Frank, Robert, Gary and Ricky Weikel, and her sister Judy Payne.
A celebration of life to honor May J. Smothers will be held at a later date.
