Obituary

Peggy Jane Fairless Haroutian, 90, of Fresno California, passed away on May 30, 2022. She was a beloved wife, sister, mother of three, grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of fourteen.

Peggy was born on August 13 th 1931 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Troy Manly Fairless and Ora Irene Rowe Fairless. She was the oldest of three daughters and was the first of her vast family to be born in a hospital, something rarely done 90 years ago.

Growing up, the family moved often between Oklahoma and Chicago.  At the age of fifteen, Peggy got a job in the restaurant where her dad was a chef, and enjoyed working and getting tips.  After graduating from high school, she got a job at the telephone company where she made excellent wages and received promotions.

Peggy met Albert (Al) Haroutian, the love of her life, in Chicago, Illinois where he was stationed while serving in the United States Coast Guard. They were married on September 19, 1953. After honeymooning in Niagara Falls, the couple traveled to Oklahoma to see Peggy's parents before settling in Fresno California in 1954 where Al's family lived.

Peggy's plans to get a job after moving to Fresno were changed by the arrival of her oldest child, Lora, nine months and two weeks after getting married. Daughter, Joyce and son, Richard were born in 1956 and 1960, respectively. As a mother of three, Peggy devoted her life to her husband and children. She supported and encouraged her children to be involved in school and other activities. As such, Peggy was room mother for all three, a member of the Parent Teacher Association, and Girl Scout Leader just to mention a few. She enjoyed sewing and made many skating and dance outfits, beautiful prom dresses and even bridesmaids' dresses for her daughters. She also spent a tremendous amount of time chauffeuring her children to such activities as school events, baseball games, skating lessons, and bowling leagues and tournaments.

Peggy was an avid and accomplished bowler herself and enjoyed the sport with her family.  Many weekends were spent at bowling tournaments for the kids.  In the evenings, Peggy and Al enjoyed gathering with the parents of the other bowlers.

Peggy and Al enjoyed vacationing with the family in Pismo Beach and taking cruises with Al's siblings and their spouses. They also loved to entertain and would often have the extended families over for backyard parties where Al would barbeque and Peggy would make her fabulous pilaf.

She loved doing things with family; playing cards, especially Pinochle, on Friday or Saturday nights; getting together to watch Monday Night Football; and family picnics at the park. Holidays were also special times for Peggy. She loved baking and decorating the house for the holidays. Christmas Eve was one of her favorites, especially when Al dressed as Santa and everyone took pictures with him.

Peggy was a collector. She loved collecting things like Maud Humphrey Bogart and other glass figurines, Kelly Barbie dolls, and milk and carnival glassware, baseball and football cards and coins. She also loved reading, taking long baths, See's candy and especially her dog, Janie.

Peggy had a passion for genealogy that she shared with her mother. They spent countless hours looking up their ancestors at the library before Ancestry.com was even created. She traced several family members back to the Revolutionary War and beyond, and was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Most of all, Peggy loved her family and endeavored do everything she could for them her whole life. She devoted many years of her life taking care of Al during his long illness with multiple sclerosis. She set aside special days for each of her grandchildren several times a year as they were growing up. Peggy was a generous person. She was generous of her time, her advice, and her love. Her every action, word and thought was motivated by her desire to provide the best life she could for her family. Peggy will be forever remembered, forever missed and forever loved.

Peggy is survived by her three children: Lora Kutka, of Fresno; Joyce Heisdorf of Clovis; and Richard Haroutian, of Fresno. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and their families: James Heisdorf of Clovis; Jonathon Kutka of Clovis; Thomas Heisdorf of Arroyo Grande, Robert Kutka, of Clovis; Joseph Heisdorf of Clovis; William Heisdorf of Fresno; and Hannah Haroutian of Fresno, fourteen great-grandchildren, her sister, Barbara Abraham, sister-in-law Helen Haroutian and many nieces and nephews. Peggy was predeceased by her loving husband in 2009, her parents and her sister, Patricia Franklin.
