Obituary

Rosemary Chin was born "Rose Wong" in Berkeley, California on April 13, 1929. The name "Mary" was added in her childhood, so she became known as "Rosemary". Rosemary's father was from Canton, China, and her mother was born in Northern California where her family owned a farm. Her parents met when her father came to work on the family farm. Rosemary's mother was only 15 when she got married, and the family had three children, two boys and a girl.

Rosemary grew up in Monterey where her parents owned a Chinese restaurant. As a child, Rosemary did very well in school, and at age 7, was the youngest member of a group of 4 girls who did tap dancing and acrobatics. The group performed at the county fair and other community events. Rosemary and her brothers were also part of the Drum and Bugle Corp of the Monterey Chinese School.

When World War II broke out, the family's restaurant was a favorite hangout for servicemen stationed at the Army base in Monterey. The jukebox at the restaurant was so popular that the money it brought in helped pay for Rosemary's college education!

Rosemary met her future husband, Henry, when he came to her home during a break at the university he was attending. It just so happened that Henry was Rosemary's oldest brother's roommate in the dorms. Henry graduated in 1949 with a degree in Civil Engineering and two years later, Rosemary completed her degree in Social Welfare. They were married on May 18, 1952 in San Francisco. Rosemary wore a satin wedding gown that her mother had made from fabric her father had gotten in China.

After moving to Sacramento for a job change, Henry & Rosemary had their first child, Rodney. The family then moved to Fresno where Henry was originally from, and had a daughter, Pamela. Rosemary was a stay-at-home mom who also enjoyed hosting game nights at their home where they played Bridge and Mah-Jong. She and Henry also took up golf, and in the summer would go out in the wee hours of the morning to play a round before it got too hot!

They also loved to travel and enjoyed cruises to Australia, the Mediterranean and Central America. A special highlight was a trip to China in 1980 just after the country had reopened after 40 years under Communist rule. A trip to Europe in 1990 included the opportunity to see a live production of The Passion Play in Oberammergau, Germany. The performance is done only once every 10 years and is produced entirely by residents of the village.

In 2007, Henry & Rosemary moved into the Terraces at San Joaquin Gardens where they lived out their last days. Rosemary was always smiling, laughing and happy to be with people. She had put her trust and faith in Jesus Christ and knew that she would spend eternity with him. Nine years after Henry passed away, God took Rosemary peacefully home on March 27, 2021, just weeks before she would have turned 92.
