"Hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us."

On June 3, 2023 at the age of 18, Scottie left his family to return to his heavenly home and into the arms of the Lord.  He was surrounded by his loving parents, grandparents, immediate family, and Hinds Hospice.

Scottie entered into this world fighting.  At the age of 3 months old, Scottie was diagnosed with a rare brain malformation called Lissencephaly.  A condition that would affect all aspects of Scottie's life, requiring his complete care by his loving parents.  A challenge yet honor they accepted with gratitude and love.  Despite Scottie's inabilities, his presence and existence were glorious.  Like being close to an angel.

Over the course of Scottie's life, Valley Children's Hospital became his second home.  Spending hundreds of nights at the hospital, his parents never leaving Scottie's side.  Scott and Sandra are a testament of love and devotion.  They were Scottie's voice, his advocate, and they made sure that every doctor, nurse, and staff at VCH knew that Scottie was loved and that he had a family who valued his existence.

Scottie's body was delicate, often battling chronic lung disease, many pneumonias, and life-threatening illnesses over the years.  Scottie earned the nickname Superman because he was a fighter.  His perseverance and inner strength were guided by a higher power.  His will to live and conquer his battles would often shock the medical doctors when they just weren't sure if he had the strength to keep going. He never gave up and he certainly surpassed the odds.

Scottie loved the L.A. Dodgers, the Lakers, and Raiders, and he loved spending time with his family and cousins.  But Scottie most enjoyed his morning kisses and talks with his little sister Marissa before the start of each and every day.

Scottie attended Garfield Special Education Center starting at 3 years old.  There he met so many wonderful and compassionate teachers, nurses and staff that provided schooling and therapy.  Scottie met other children like himself and bonded with so many.  It is because of the staff at Garfield that Scottie earned his diploma from Buchanan High School just three days before his passing.

Scottie is survived by his parents, Scott and Sandra and his sister Marissa; his grandparents, Joe and Cristela Chavez and Carol Martin; his Tio's Joe and Leticia Chavez, and cousins Celina, Joey, and Gabby Chavez.  Scottie was also blessed to have a large and loving extended family, with many uncles, aunts and cousins who adored him.

Scottie is preceded in death by his Great Grandmother Placida Jasso, his Grandfather Papa Bill, his Uncle Brian Martin, and many relatives.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Hinds Hospice Kids for their compassionate care and guidance over Scottie; all the doctors and staff at Valley Children's Hospital who have provided care over the years; the staff at Garfield Special Education Center; all of our family and friends who have supported and prayed for us; and our sincerest gratitude to our City of Fresno work family for all their kindness and support during this very difficult time.
